Extension and renovation of the mosque and community centre for Colchester

CICC commissioned leading architect Abul Mahdi from Studio Jayga to design the new mosque and community centre. Work started on the site (113 Bromley Road, Colchester CO4 3JG, previously the Beehive Pub) purchased in 2019.

Abul Mahdi created a stunning design transform this building into modern state of the art building complement the surrounding architecture while exhibiting a distinctive Islamic design (see below). The building will function both as a mosque and a community centre. The space has been cleverly designed so that the multifunctional hall will be can be subdivided into smaller spaces which can be used as seminar rooms for classes, meetings and coffee mornings. It will be used as a hub for all manner of community activities and will be wheelchair and family friendly.

Proposed

The first phase of the project was to remove all existing outbuildings and to level the site to one level so that is can be accessed by all. This involved removing 1400 tons of soil!

The Existing building then needed to be underpinned at the back to strengthen the existing structure. And foundations laid for the extension to be built at the back of the current building

An extensive cantilever retaining wall was built at the perimeter of the site.

The next phase of the project is the construction of the “shell”. This is an exciting phase of the project with construction of the walls and roof. This will involve a considerable amount of steel work to support the structure.
